1979: Ooh Child, Over the Edge of Phantasm

1979's Over the Edge and Phantasm both feature narrow escapes by their adolescent male protagonists from exploding cars driven by villainous antagonists.  Music is Valerie Carter's version of "O-o-h Child" heard at the finale of Over the Edge, in lieu of director Jonathan Kaplan's preferred "Baba O'Riley."

Thanks for sharing this video, it's fantastic. Phantasm and Over the Edge are such important movies to me and I'd never made this connection before. (And I didn't know about the Fast Times at Ridgemont High mention, either.) Lastly, that Over the Edge poster is nuts.

Thanks for sharing the video, it's fantastic. Both Phantasm and Over the Edge are really important to me and I hadn't ever made that particular connection before. (Also: I'd never seen that crazy Over the Edge poster, it's nuts!) No disrespect to Jonathan Kaplan, but I think Baba O'Reilly might be too on-the-nose. The Valerie Carter cover of "Ooh Child" makes for a melancholy ending.

Thanks, Kevin! Much appreciated. I agree that the Valerie Carter song works really well at that moment, better than the Who tune would, particularly given how emotional and moving that ending is.

Just saw this video and my mouth is agape - hilarious, plus that Over the Edge poster is unbelievable! It makes this tough badass childhood coming of age destruction film look like an AIP car crash film starring Peter Fonda. Good work. Over the Edge is one of my all time favorite films, and Don Coscarelli is a genius, love that John Dies at the End. Nice blog bro. I'm still reeling.
